God's Covenant With Israel Through Abraham

Background of Abrahamic Covenant

Although the Abrahamic covenant is mentioned in the New Testament and applied to Christians and spiritual children of God through the seed of Abraham Jesus Christ (the Messiah), I urge any Christians who think this is the only part of the Abrahamic covenant that still applied with God to carefully reconsider. Although as a born again Christian I agree that in Galatians, Romans or other similiar parts of the New Testament God does say through the apostle Paul that Christians are partakers of the Abrahamic Covenant and that the Lord Jesus Christ is the promised seed of Abraham, there are other scriptures even some in the New Testament that also call the Jews or God's chosen earthly people Israel as the earthly seed of Abraham. Since the Abrahamic covenant was totally at God's initiative it is only dependent on the faithfulness of God not on Israel as the New Testament or New Testament is only based on God's faithfulness through the Lord JEsus Christ not on the individual Christian since the New Covenant or New Testament is also an unconditional covenant. What I am saying is that Israel's unfaithfulness in Old Testament days as well as their for the most part rejecting the Lord Jesus Christ (Messiah) as their Messiah and Redeemer did not permanently disqualify them as beneficiaries of the Abrahamic covenant it only temporarily set them aside until the Church age is completed which will soon be the case when the Church is removed to heaven at the rapture or catching up of the church. Even in Galatians chapter 3 which people that advocate "replacement theology" in which it is proposed that the church has permanently replaced Israel or the Jews as God's chosen people is lacking anything applied to the Church of a promised land which was the other main element of the Abrahamic Covenant as applied to Israel or the Jews and that I believe gives them authority to claim the holy land as their land as they have since 1948 as God promised he would bring them back to their land in the last days. The idea that because the Jews have been out of the land for a long time or that they were scattered from the land since shortly after they had a part in crucifying Jesus who they should have received as their Messiah and Redeemer I think misses the point from scriptures such as Romans 11, Luke 1 and Revelation 20 with the 1000 years Messianic Kingdom that God promised to restore Israel into their land and as His chosen earthly people and his main witness on earth in the last days especially after the rapture of the church but starting in earnest in 1948 with the establishment of modern state of Israel. The true church is God's heavenly people that has a heavenly promised land in the heavenly Jerusalem and people that say the United States or the Vatican or some other country of the Gentiles is the promised land or the true or new Israel err through not interpreting the Bible literally and failing to note that even in the Abrahamic covenant applied to the Church there is not mention of a promised land on earth as there was abundantly to God's chosen earthly people the Jews in the Old Testament and that still applies especially at this time due to God's faithfulness.

Reminder of the Abrahamic Covenant with the people of Israel During the Time of Moses and the Exodus from Egypt Around 1490 BC from Exodus 13

In this chapter just on the brink of Israel leaving Egypt under Moses, God directed Moses to remind the Jews or Israelites of the covenant he made with their ancestors through their leaders Abraham, Isaac and Jacob that he would give them the land of Canaan or the holy land for their possession. This was the land formerly occupies by the Canaanites and other Canaanite tribes such as the Hittites, the Amorites, the Hivites and the Jebusites who were pagans involved in much idolatry and immorality that displeased the true and living God the God of Israel. This land was also a fruitful or fertile land being described as a land that flowed with milk and honey. God instructed the Israelites to keep the feast of Passover and Unleavened bread and dedicate their firstborn to him when they entered into the promised land of Canaan although God later chose the tribe of the Levites in place of the first born sons of all 12 tribes of Israel. The scripture reference from Exodus 13 of God confirming the Abrahamic covenant of the promised land of the holy land between the Jordan river and the Mediterranean to the Jews the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob for their lasting possession is as follows:

Scripture Reference from Exodus 13 of God's Confirming the Abrahamic Covenant of the Promised Land of the Holy Land to the Descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob Through Moses When the Children of Israel Were About to Leave Egypt for the Promised Land in 1491 BC

And it shall be when the LORD shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee, a land flowing with milk and honey, that thou shalt keep this service in this month. ... And it shall be when the LORD shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanites, as he sware unto thee and to thy fathers, and shall give it thee, Exodus 13:5, 11

Confirmation of Abrahamic Covenant With Israel After They Had Occupied the Land God Promised Them in Joshua 21 in 1444 BC

In Joshua 21 Moses the man of God notes that God was faithful to give Israel all the land that he promised them after they were faithful to him to dedicate themselves to him and seek his guidance for fighting for the land that He had promised their fathers (Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Israel). This was a main part of the Abrahamic covenant that God promised the Jewish people or people of Israel or which he had never revoked because like the New Covenant it is only based on God's faithfulness not on Israel or individual Christians in the case of the New Covenant in this age. Therefore it can also be viewed as God honouring the covenant he made with Israel for the promised land since they claimed most of it in the war of independence in 1948 and the six day war in 1967 although the six day war was fought in large part because then Israel or the Jews were threatened with immediate loss of their homeland by the surrounding Arabs who were already preparing for an offensive war before Israel took the offense and gained the momentum. The Jews will yet get a modified version of the boundaries God promised them by Abraham as viewed in Ezekiel 47 during the Messianic Kingdom or Millennial Kingdom. The scripture reference in Joshua 21 of God fulfilling his covenant with Abraham to give his descendants the Jews the holy land as their inheritance is as follows:

Scripture Reference from Joshua 21 of God Fulfilling His Promise To Abraham of the Promised Land of Israel Through Israel's Leader of General Joshua in 1444 BC

And the LORD gave unto Israel all the land which he sware to give unto their fathers; and they possessed it, and dwelt therein. Joshua 21:43

Abrahamic Covenant as First Given to Abraham in Genesis 12 Especially to the Israelites God's Earthly People and to Some Extent to God's Spiritual People the Church

Although it is true that God also called Abraham out of his his country and his kindred in the sense of calling him out of the idolatry and false gods and false godesses they worshipped and that he likely would have worshipped before being called by the true and living God the God of the Bible there is stil emphasis on God calling Abraham to the promised earthly land of Canaan or Israel that is involved with God's chosen earthly people the children of Israel or the Jews. Part of the spiritual calling of Abraham was part of his call by faith to the true God from idolatry that is more associated with Abraham being the father of the faithful in the true God that is more related to the Church as desendants of Abraham through Abraham's seed the Messiah or Christ the Lord Jesus. In the Old TEstament sense God making a great nation out of Abraham was through his physical descendants including his son Isaac and his grandson Jacob (Israel) through whom came the Israelites God's chosen earthly people or nation. Later in Genesis this covenant with Abraham including a promised land is extended to Isaac and Jacob. God said to Abraham He would bless those who bless him and curse those who curse him which still applies to those who bless or curse the children of Israel or the Jews today that are the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. It is through Abraham all the nations of the world will be blessed by God either through the Gentiles or non-Jewish nations that bless Israel and the God of Israel in Old TEstament, the tribulation or the Millennial or Messianic Kingdom periods or through the Gentiles that trust in the Lord Jesus Christ the spiritual seed of Abraham and that become part of God's spiritual people the Church through the Lord Jesus who was physically descended from Abraham and then through Abraham. God then appeared again to Abraham and promised him and his physical seed the earthly nation of Israel the land of Canaan or Israel as their earthly inheritance and source of some of the material blessings God would give them for obedience to Him. The scripture reference in Genesis 12 of the basics of the Abrahamic covenant especially to God's earthly people the Jews and to some extent God's spiritual people the Church is as follows:

Scripture Reference from Genesis 12 of God's Covenant with Abraham and Especially His Earthly People Israel and to Some Extent His Spiritual People the Church

Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of hte earth be blessed. ... And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him. And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD. Genesis 12:1-3, 7-8
